MATRIX METHOD

Question: A fortune teller’s spherical crystal ball has a refractive index of 1.50, and a diameter of 16 cm. Part 1 of this question is asked in a previous Chegg post, and the question asked for what the system matrix is of the crystal ball in air. Part 2 of this question is as follows: Where will sunlight be focused by the crystal ball? Specify with respect to the back vertex of crystal ball.

** Note: there will be a part 3 and part 4 follow-up questions to this question posted in 2 other posts, if anyone is interested in them **

Explanation / Answer

Refractive index of the ball is =1.5

that means its a glass material

Diameter of the ball is =16 cm

Radius of the ball =16/2=8 cm

hence the radius of curvature of the ball is R=8cm

hence when a sun light fall on the ball it will focus at distance from the optical center that is focal length

f=R/2=8/2=4 cm from the optical centre
