Question

PHYS 206 Spring 2018 Labl Homework A student's diagram for the electric forces acting on two negatively charged (-Q and -40) particles is shown below 4. on A ty B 0, 4m -40, m Fon B by A Particle A Particle B What, if anything, is wrong with this statement? If something is wrong, explain the error and how to correct it. If the statement is valid, explain why. 5. Three charges are fixed at the vertices of each of the equilateral triangles shown below. All charges have the same magnitude. Only charge 1 is positive.

Explanation / Answer

The electric forces obey Newton's third law of motion i.e., force exerted by particle A on particle B is equal and opposite to the force exerted by particle B on particle A. Also, given that both the charges are -ve and like charges repel. So, the direction of the forces shown are correct but the magnitudes shown are incorrect because their magnitudes are equal. The length of the arrows representing the force vectors should be equal.

Also, note that the electrical forces are independent of the masses of the particles and depend only on the charges and the separation between the charges.
