Question
a ceramic jar contains five red balls, three blue balls and six green balls. You draw balls from this jar without replacement. Give your answer in fraction form (in the first blank line) and in decimal form (in the second blank line). What is the probability that the first ball drawn is green? What is the probability that the second ball drawn is also green? What is the probabilty that the second ball drawn is blue given that the first ball drawn was green? What would be the probability that second ball drawn is green if you did the drawing with replacement
Explanation / Answer
Total number of balls in the jar is : 5+3+6 = 14
Since there are 6 greens balls so the probability that the first ball drawn is green is
P(first green) = 6 / 14
Since balls are drawn from the jar without replacement so after drawing first ball green, number of jars remaing in the jar is 13 and number of green balls remaing is 5 so
P(second ball green) = 5 / 13
----------------
Since balls are drawn from the jar without replacement so after drawing first ball green, number of jars remaining in the jar is 13 and number of blue balls remaing is 3 so
P(second ball blue | first ball green) = 3 / 13
-----------------
Now since balls are drawn with replacement so the probabaility of drawing green ball remain same at each draw. So
P(second ball green) = 6 / 14 = 3 / 7
