Question

Lactic acid 4 g Salicylic acid 5 g Trichloroacetic acid 2 g Flexible collodion qs ad 100 g Sig: wart remover. Use as directed i. Flexible collodion contains 20% w/w camphor and 30% w/w castor oil. How many grams of each would be contained in 30 g of the mixture? ii. The specific gravity of castor oil is 0.955. How many milliliters of the oil is contained in 30 g of the mixture? iii. If the specific gravity of the mixture is 0.781, what are the percent w/v is con-centrations of lactic acid, salicylic acid, and trichloroacetic acid in the mixture?

Explanation / Answer

Lactic acid – 4g

Salicylic acid – 5g

Trichloroacetic acid – 2g

Flexible collodoin qs ad – 100g

Ans i)

Flexible collodoin   : 20% w/w camphor
                                    30% w/w castor oil

In 30 gm of mixture:

Camphor = 20% of 30 = 6 gm

Castor oil = 30% of 30 = 9 gm

Ans ii) Specific gravity of castor oil = 0.955.

Oil in 30gm mixture = 0.955 * 30

                                    = 28.65 gm

Ans iii) Specific gravity of mixture = 0.7815

% of lactic acid in mixture = 0.781 * 4 = 3.12 = 3.12 / (4+5+2+100) = 2.8%

Similarly , % of salicylic acid = 3.5%

% of Trichloroacetic acid = 1.4%
