Question
You are able to get three summer jobs to help sabe for future college expenses. In your job as a cashier, your work twenty hours per week and earn $6.50 per hour. Your second and third jobs are both at local hospital. There yu can earn $8.50 per hour as a payroll clerck and $6.00 per hour as an aide. You always work ten hours fewer per week as an aide than you do as the payroll clerk. Your total weekly salary depends on the number of hours that you work at each job
Determine the idnependent and dependent variables for this situation
Explanation / Answer
Let S be the total weekly salary
and let t be the number of hours we work at each job.
Now as the salary depends on the hours worked
=> S is depedent on t , and this makes S the dependent variable
and the time t is the independent variable.
As a cashier we work 20 hours per week and earn $6.50 per hour
=> Let S1 be the weekly salary as a cashier
Hence , S1 = 20 * 6.50 = $ 130
As a payroll clerk we make $ 8.50 per hour and
As a aide we make $ 6.00 per week.
You always work ten hours fewer per week as an aide than you do as the payroll clerk.
=> If we work t hours per week as a clerk
then as an aide we would work = (t - 10) hours per week
If S2 and S3 are the salaries per week as a clerk and aide respectively.
=> S2 = salary per week * number of hours worked per week = 8.5*t
=> S3 = salary per week * number of hours worked per week = 6*(t -10)
Hence the total salary per week is , S = S1 + S2 + S3
=> S = 130 + 8.5t + 6*(t - 10) = 130 + 8.5t + 6t - 60
S = 14.5t + 70
Hence the total salary is , S = 14.5t + 70
