Question
Use the function below to answer the question. f(x) = -5x2-17+20x Find the vertex and axis of symetry. Here's my question to you. How can i put the above equationinto vertex form? I have tried but have not been able to solvethis? Help please, thanks a lot! Use the function below to answer the question. f(x) = -5x2-17+20x Find the vertex and axis of symetry. Here's my question to you. How can i put the above equationinto vertex form? I have tried but have not been able to solvethis? Help please, thanks a lot!Explanation / Answer
f(x) = -5x^2 + 20x - 17 to complete the square, we must first get a one in front of thesquare term = - 5 ( x^2 -4x ) -17 = - 5 ( x^2 -2(2)x + 2^2 - 4 ) -17 = -5 ( x^2 -4x + 4 ) +20 -17 = -5 ( x - 2)^2 +3 the axis of symmetry is x = 2 and thevertex is (2,3). The parabola opens down, hence there is a maximum value of 3 when x= 2 hope this helps
