Question

Weight and length of 70 newborn babies-their age is between 0 to 4 weeks- are measured. Consider the following scatterplot of the weight of newborn babies (in grams) versus their length (in centimeters). It seems there is an association between Weight and Length. Can we conclude that Weight has an impact on Length? A, No, because there may be a confounding variable B, Yes, because the association is very strong C, No, because the relationship is negative D, Yes, because the association is positive

Explanation / Answer

Answer= D, Yes, because the association is positive.

Scatterplot is used to evaluate and interpret the correlation between two variables. the above given scatterplot does not show a linear correlation but it shows a positive non linear correlation among the two variables under study, length and weight of the babies.

The scatterplot shows the various pairs (weight, length) and the pairs plotted, are not so densely plotted (i.e.,points are not so close to each other and are spaced out). Hence, we cannot call it a strong association. Therefore "B" wont be the answer. Evidently, the relationship is not negative. Hence option "C" also will be rules out. There is no confounding variable hence option"A" has no meaning here!
