Thanks!
33)Two different nuclei, Carbon 12 (electric charge +6e, mass 2.00x1027 kg) and Carbon 14 (electric charge +6e, mass 2.34x1027 kg), are to be separated by a mass spectrometer. There is a 0.5-T magnetic field in the main chamber of the device, oriented perpendicular to the incoming beam of carbon nuclei. If the velocity of all nuclei in the incoming beam is 1.0x107 m/s, what is (a) the radius of curvature for each type of nucleus, and (b) what is the distance Ax between their positions as they strike the photographic film at the bottom of the figure below? Sa ?' Photographic film

Explanation / Answer

Radius of circular path in magnetic field :

Magnetic force = centripetal force

qVB = mV2/r

r = mV/qB , m - mass , V - velocity, q - charge, B - magnetic field.

r1 = 2×10-27×107/(6×1.6×10-19×0.5)

r1 = 0.4167 m

r2 = 2.34×10-27×107/(6×1.6×10-19×0.5)

r2 = 0.4875 m

Distance on screen = 2?r = 2(r2 - r1) = 2(0.4875 - 0.4167)

= 0.1416 m
