Question

1. An advertising agency wants to know whether a particular ad is effective in changing people’s opinion of a product. They measure people’s opinion about the product by having people rate the product on a scale from 1-7, with 1 meaning very unfavorable and 7 meaning a very favorable opinion. They have a sample of consumers rate their overall opinion of the product, then show everyone in the sample an advertisement for that product, and have them rate their opinion again.

What inferential test would you run?

Explanation / Answer

Type of Inferential Test that we would run:

t test for paired observations (Dependent samples)

EXPLANATION:

In the two sample t test, the two samples must be independent, i.e., the values of items in one sample must be independent of the values of the other. But, here, the sample sample of consumers's rating of their opinion of the product before and after the advertisement, is considered. The sample values are no longer indepent. They are in fact correlated pairs. In such a situation, t test for paired observations to be applied.
