Question
5. The distribution of gasoline the histogram below. prices (S per gallon) among 37 gas stations is shown in Frequency 20 Describe the shape of the distribution in terms of modality, symmetry/skew, and unusual features. (6 points) a. b. Based on your answer to part a (don't try to calculate these!l) which do you expect would be larger, the mean or the median? Why? (4 points) Although you can't tell from the histogram, the cheapest gas station had gas that cost $2.39 per gallon. Suppose that gas station raised their price. How would the Mean and Median affected? (4 points) The Mean would c. i. Increase ii. Decrease ii. Stay the same iv. More information is needed The Median would i. Increase ii. Decrease ii. Stay the same iv. More information is neededExplanation / Answer
5.
This is clearly a right skewed distribution, because as the prize money increases the no. of poeple who have earned this prize money decreases.
a. The distribution is hugely skewed towards the left. This is because mode of the distribution is
more towards the right, at 2.8 and lower frequencies are on the left
There is no symmetry in the figure, and no unsual features apart from the skewed distribution
b. The median is larger than the mean in left skewed distribution, as is the case here
c. The mean will increase, as averge will increase due to it one of points increasing to a higher value
So, answer is i. INcrease
Median ,may or may not change depending upto the value this 2.39 has changed to.
So, iv. More infomration is needed.
