Before a road trip you check the tire pressure on all fourtires of your car. You find each is at 32 psig. The ambient temperature is 60 degree F. You start driving and end up in the desert in the middle of the day. Because of the high ambient temperature and the heating of the tires due to the constant flexing of the material, the tire temperature reaches 120 degree F. If the ambient pressure remains constant at 14.7 psia, estimate the gauge pressure inside the hot tires. You may assume no air has leaked out.Explanation / Answer
Since volume is constant
P1/T1 = P2/T2
P2 = P1*(T2/T1) = 32*(2) = 64 psig
Guage Pressure = P2 -Ptam = 64 - 14.7 - 49.3 psig
