Explanation / Answer

Alzheimer Disease is a progressive neurodegenrative disease that affects adults who are older than 65 years. It leads to symptoms of dementia in which affected people show decline in memory and other thining skills which makes them inefficient to perform their daily activities. In other words, it leads to loss of mental and physical functioning in affected people. The symptoms associated are categorised into early stage symptoms and late stage symptoms. The early stage symptoms include short term memory loss, not able to focus or concentrate, not being able to grasp new information, showing low reasoning potential ,gradual change in personality and gradual decrease in communication skills as the disease progresses. The late stage symptoms include becoming increasingly dependent on others for care, less or no response to outside environement and people, becoming emotionally detached from other people, becoming restless, suffering sleep associated problems and even becoming unfriendly with people.Though the exact cause of the disease still remains known and it is predicted that it may be age related or genetically associated, several theories have been proposed that include facts such as biochemical changes during the growth of the brain, autoimmune reactions, infections with viruses that act slowly, defects in blood vessels and deficiency of neurotransmitters in brain. The diagnosis process at the first place includes collection of evidences that are related to the disturbances associated with memory and cognition.Next step would include the neurological examinations to identify the sensory and motor defects. The last step would include brain scans to identify atrophy.Though there is no exact cure for the disease, but drug therapy could be helpful to control the memory loss by reducing cognitive decline, anxiety and depression.Apart from this protection from brain injury, sufficient intake of fluids, nutrition, personal hygiene and emotional support from family members could be of great help in curing the disease to some extent.
