Question

A long jump competition took place recently at a local high school. The coach is interested in performing as well as possible in the next competition, so he is looking at the relationship between height and distance jumped (both measured in inches). He uses height to predict distance. The data was analyzed to produce the following regression line:

y? = 6.4852 + 1.0345x ; R^2 = 82%

A) A certain runner jumped a distance of 84 inches and is 74 inches tall. What is the residual for this runner? (Round to 4 decimal places)

B) What is the correlation coefficient? (Round to 4 decimal places)

C) Interpret the correlation coefficient that you calculated in part B

Explanation / Answer

a)

here predicted value of distance=6.4852+1.0345*74=83.0382

therefore residual for this runner =actual value-predicted value =84-83.0382=0.9618

b) correlation coefficient r=(R2)1/2 =(0.82)1/2 =0.9055

(Note the sign will remain positive as slope sign of regression equaiton is positive)

c)

as correlation coefficient is posiitve and near to 1; this shows that there is a strong positive linear relationship between height and distance jumped.
