Question
2. On this map of Utah, draw a line indicating the main belt of seismicity along the Wasatch Front. Then answer the following questions. What is this belt of seismicity known as? What is rifting? Look at the Great Basin region of the United States, and tell me if you think rifting created it. Support your answer with cited sources from online. Is this seismic band part of a major plate boundary? If so, what are the interacting plates? If not, what is the cause of faulting and seismic activity in this region. Again, support your answer with a cited source.Explanation / Answer
Ans1 seismicity belt are those geographical zones on earth which are more prone to earthquake activities. The. Outermost layer of lithosphere is made of several tectonic plates , which move against each other and location of interplates earthquakes are known as seismicity belts.
Ans2 Rifting is the stretching process of earths lithosphere . It is basically pulled apart of lithosphere and is an example of extensional tectonic. Major rifts occur where gap is created between divergent plates boundaries .
Great basin is a kind of deep valley which is divided by mountains. Geologists considered Great basin as a process of stretching and cracking of earth surface . Upper lithosphere is stretched upto double of its original width. Elevation of crust is relatively getting thinnner due to stretching and faults are created allover basin.
Speculation is also made that east pacific rise rift zone split the basin into pieces through inperial vallley , letting gulf of california reaching it.
Ans 3 yes it is towards the major plate boundary . Interacting plates are those which are coming towards each other and also know as Convergent plate boundaries.
As the mountains keep on growing faults which are occuring stretching keeps on blocking actvities, earthquake continue to occur . These faults displace the layers of earth.
