Question
1. At what point in the Wilson cycle are the continents, plates, etc. that define the Atlantic Ocean today? How far back in earth history do you have to go to get to the same point in the cycle with respect to eastern North America? Briefly describe the phases of the Wilson Cycle from then until now and when each occurred. ??2. Give 1 example of a phenomenon that is unique in the history of the Earth. Why is it unique? Then give 1 example of a phenomenon that is repeated again and again in Earth history. Why does it recur? 1. Explanation / Answer
In simple terms wilson cycle is the opening and closing of ocean.
The opening of ocean is intiated by rifting in the intra-continental plate, the rifting may be due to mantle upwelling.
With the widening of the rift there is occurence of oceanic plates which drift apart and hence opening of ocean.
These plates drift apart for some geological time, after which one or both the plates may start coming togther again. thus initating the closure process. One of the oceanic plate may subduct beneath the other. with complete subduction there is closing of ocean. This may lead to some orogenic activity.
presently the atlantic ocean is expanding, hence it is during its enlargement phase. For N america the same period occured during the ordovician.
2. there are many phenomena which are unique in some way, However i credit the mass extinction at the permian triassic PT boundary due to meteoritic impact as most unique. it cleared as much as 60% living species from the face of the earth.
now, earthquake is a phennomena which keeps repeating during the earth history. it keeps re occuring due to plate motion(build up and release of stresses)
