Dept of Chemistry ESE 12-1432 Quiz #8 Name: Date: 1. Name the two varnbes which we use to classify air masses 2. What are the two air mass modiflcation symbols? List them and their meaning. 3. Describe the process that produces Lake Effect Snow. (Make sure to include where and how it happens) 4· The Great Lakes are located on the North American continent in the Northern Hemisphere. Circle the area around Lake Superior where you would expect the most snowfall. The Great Lakes Quebee Michigan Wisconsin Michigarn lewa New York OhieExplanation / Answer
1. Variables used for the classification of the air masses:
Air masses are classified according to the temperature and moisture characteristics of their source regions
a. Based on moisture content: continental (dry) and maritime (moist).
b. Based on temperature: tropical (warm), polar (cold), arctic (extremely cold).
2. Modification symbols of air mass fronts
There are four types of symbols and fronts
a. Cold front
b. Warm front
c. Occluded front
d. statonary front
3. Lake effect snow
Lake-effect snow formed when cold air moves across the warmer waters of a lake. Water holds on to heat more than air.
There are many parameters/elements that are required to form lake effect snow. These elements are instability, fetch, wind shear, upstream moisture, upwind lakes, synoptic (large)-scale forcing, orography/topography, and snow or ice cover. As a result, below freezing air often passes over much warmer water. This causes some lake water to evaporate into the air and warm it. This warmer, wetter air rises and cools as it moves away from the lake. When it cools, it dumps all that moisture on the ground. If it’s cold enough, that moisture becomes snow.
The most affected areas include the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Central New York, Western New York, Northwestern Pennsylvania, Northeastern Ohio, southwestern Ontario and central Ontario, Northeastern Illinois (along the shoreline of Lake Michigan), northwestern and northcentral Indiana (mostly between Gary and Elkhart), and West Michigan
