Question

The following is my explanation of the causes of earthquake. Please help me to change some wrong information. Thanks

As a normal geology movement, the motion of asthenosphere may cause the breakage of crustal rock. When a rock falls, the vertical height of it decreases and its gravity can work constantly, which results in falling velocity of this rock keeps increasing. According to energy conservation, the gravitational potential energy of this rock has been transferred to new kinetic energy. This new kinetic energy will transfer to the next rock and increase its gravitational potential energy, which means the fall of the next rock will produce stronger energy. And so on, this energy will become stronger and stronger and transfer to the Earth’s surface by seismic waves. Finally, this huge power will lead to destructive earthquake.

Explanation / Answer

Earth quakes occur due to the plate movement and this is not like rock falling. During the movement of the plates, they move up and down. But they fall at once and this creates big wave of energy which will be transmitted immediately throughout the asthenosphere.

This will immediately reach other plates and causes earthquake. The seismic waves are generated by the sudden movements. So there is no need of gradual development of kinetic energy.

Tsunami in December is just a single movement of plate and this caused high energy wave. Even the earth quake have same thing.
