Question
Explain or interpret the following in terms of the principles of atmospheric radiation: The colors of stars are related to their temperatures whereas the colors of the planets are not. Low clouds emit more infrared radiation than high clouds of comparable thickness. Light colored clothing is frequently worn in hot climates. The presence of a cloud cover tends to favor lower daytime temperatures and higher nighttime temperatures. There has been some concern that a long-term increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, caused by the burning of fossil fuel, might tend to raise the mean temperature of the earth's atmosphere.Explanation / Answer
a. according to Wein's law of radiation, higher wavelength has comparetively less temperature value than low wavelength emitted radiation by the existed stars.
b. Low cloud has more water content and thus the infra red radiation interacts with it whereas this phenonmena is generally not present in higher cloud of same thickeness.
c. In hot climate, light color absorbs less amount of heat and light whereas dark color clothes can absorb more heat which is not comfortable to wear.
d. cloud cover can prevent us from incoming radiation in day time whereas in night time, the heat emitted from the surface cannot escape from the atmosphere due to the presence of cloud.
e. CO2 is a green house gas and it absorbs heat from the atmosphere and the increment of its content thus increase the global temperature.
