Question

Using the examples discussed below, evaluate the relative impact of human and natural factors that cause climate change. Use secondary data to back up your answers.

Deforestation powers climate change. Trees help carry on the water cycle by restoring water vapour back into the atmosphere. Without the help of trees to do this, forest lands may quickly become bare deserts. When the trees are being cut down, animals and other spices die, and the others may need to travel to some other forest to survive. When trees are cut down, it doesn’t just destroy the environment but also release the rest of the carbon stored in the trees. The trees also have a role of absorbing the greenhouse gases that could cause global warming. More trees mean that a smaller amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere but the fewer trees the more greenhouse gases may enter the atmosphere.

Fossil fuel

The ascendant product of fossil fuel combustion is carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas. The build-up gases in the atmosphere lead to an amplification of natural greenhouse effect. These greenhouse gases create warmer surroundings.

Volcanic activities

There is a large amount of sulfur dioxide (SO2), water vapour, ash, and dust in the atmosphere when a volcano erupts. The eruption of volcano affect the atmosphere by causing climate change for years, however, the volcanic activity is lost after a few days if possible. Gases and dust particles block the sunlight and lead to a cool temperature.

Solar influence

The earth’s heat is from the sun, which is the primary source. So, any change in the solar output will affect the climate. There is a slight decrease in the sun’s whole energy output, since 1970 observation satellite. It is said that observations identify that the stratosphere is cooling while the troposphere is warming up. This is consistent with greenhouse gas heating, not solar heating. Since 1750, the average amount of energy coming from the sun either remained constant or increased slightly.

Explanation / Answer

Use of means of transportation that use fuel

Day to day use of fuel powered vehicles produces most of the greenhouse gases, being one if not the main human activity that contributes towards climate change and the increasing of the global temperature year by year. Combustion of fuel produces carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas.

Meat production

The meat industry produces a huge amount of greenhouse gases, and it has been found to be a very important factor in global warming. The types of gases produced in this industry besides carbon dioxide are methane and nitrous oxide, which are 20 and 300 times more powerful than carbon dioxide to cause a greenhouse effect. The meat, egg, and dairy industries produce 65% of all the nitrous oxide.
