Tropocollagen is a double helix of two lefi-handed polypeptide chains. .The interactions that stabilize multisubunit complexes are different to those that stabilize tertiary structure. In considering protein secondary structure which of the following are true? (Check all applied) [1] A) An a helix has 3.6 residues per turn. B) A network of main-chain hydrogen bonds connect ß strands in a B sheet. C) The most common structures are the a belix and the coil structure. D) The 310 helix is right-handed and often contains proline residues. E) The B strands can be in either parallel or antiparallel configuration (5) There are at least three amino acids quite abundant in collagen. What are they? [I) (6) What are four levels of protein structure? [1)

Explanation / Answer

1. Hydrogen bonding between amide protons and carbonyl oxygen is necessary to stabilize a regular folding of protein secondary structure. The secondary structure of proteins are organised into alpha helices and beta pleated sheets. The hydrogen bonds formed between the amide protons of a chain with carbonyl oxygen of amino acid present in its folded (parallel) portion or between one sheets and another sheet of beta pleated sheets. Thus hydrogen bonds keep together both shhets or maintain the alpha helices of secondary structure.

2. Glycine and pre-proline amino acids are exception to Ramachandran plot. The phi anf psi angle involves the side chain of an amino acid while glycine do not have side chain. Proline contains nitrogen atom in cyclic ring and thus steric interaction with CH2 portion interferes.
