Question

CHEM 2103

Assignment #2

1. (a) Use the Hougen Watson chart based on experimental data shown in figure 7.7

of the text and any other required data (look in the appendices of the book) to calculate the density of ethyne gas (in g/L) at 307 bar and 266oC.

(b) Repeat the calculation in part (a) above using the Hougen Watson chart derived from the van

der Waals equation, shown in figure 7.8 of the text.

(c) Calculate the density under the same conditions assuming the ideal gas law.

(d) Comment on the three values obtained above.

FIGURE 7.7 Values for the compression factor are shown as a function of the reduced pres- sure P, for seven different gases at the six values of reduced temperatures indicated in the figure. Explanation / Answer

answer. PV=nRT

Given P= 307 bar i.e. 302 at,

T= 266+273=539K

V=nRT/P

n= no of moles of ethylene

=m/MM, where MM= molecular mass of ethylene= 28.054 g/mol

V=mRT/MMP

but density m/V=MMP/RT

= 28g/mol*302atm/(0.08210L.atm/mol.K*539K)

=191.08 g/L
