Question
13. House sparrows are an introduced species from Europe that nest in cavities and birdhouses favored by native bluebirds. Speculate on all the possible outcomes of this competition and what may happen to bluebird population numbers.
14. As global temperatures warm, species distributions move toward cooler climates. What, then, do you think will happen to species diversity at the equator?
15. Explain how the greenhouse effect warms Earth and list two greenhouse gases.
16. Methane is 30 times more powerful than carbon dioxide at absorbing heat. Livestock such as cattle account for 28% of global methane emissions. With this in mind, speculate on the effect of the American diet on global warming.
17. How would you respond to someone who says that the increase in global temperatures of the last 200 years is just part of normal global temperature fluctuations?
18. Explain how the change in distribution pattern of an insect-eating bird can lead to an increase in the number of forest fires.
19. Explain why the Arctic and Antarctic have warmed twice as much as other regions of the world.
20. Explain how the industrial revolution led to global warming.
21. Explain how carbon cycles between inorganic and organic forms.
22. What is one thing you can do to help reduce climate change?
Explanation / Answer
13.Each and every organisms in the earth struggle for survival, for food, habitat and reproduction. The body size, strength and reproducability helps a particular species to keep pace with other organisms even if they have to compete and harm the organism who shares the same ecology.
In the case of house sparrow and blue bird the same survival struggle and competition is observed. When house sparrows(invaders) are introduced from Europe in 1851 the native species like blubirds had to face high threat for survival food, nest sites and reproduction as the sparrows out numbered the blue bird species. The already occupied nestes are attached and captured by sparrows which resulted in population declination of blue bird species.
Threat caused by sparrows
14)Change in climatic condition at the equator may cause situation like drought which results in migration of native species to the cooler regions in the search of food, habitat and favorable environment to survive. The migaration of one species from native land to foreghin land cause threat extensive competition between two different species causing declination of one or more species which is low in strength and capacity to stand on for survival. And sometime migrated predators over consume the prey and cause imbalance in food chain which leads to deterioration of the ecosystem.Th species diversity at the ecosystem change species distribution ,biological behaviour, ecological interaction, assecmblage composition and community dynamics.
15)Global warming is a phenomenon in which the temperature of earth increases more than its optimum level due to excessive use of fossil fuels, deforestation, hamful farm pratices and release of induxtrial gases to the tamosphere.
Effects-
19)Artic amplification is the reason of the warming up of the polar region comapred with other regions. The sea ice ,light color of the environment by snow and less vegetation cause the warming up of the polar region leading to ice melting resulting in more exposed ocean which traps heat.It elevates calamities like flood in lower altitude areas and extinction of polar species due to starvation and behavioral changes.
