Question
2) Describe at least three factors that can influence community succession in terrestrial or aquatic environments along with examples (a plus would be relating your factors-example to conservation biology). For example (example) the whole community succession (from sand to macroalgae to seagrasses) of tropical seagrass beds could take place in about 10 years. It depends upon (factors) nutrient availability, sunlight, and herbivory. Thus, when careless boat drivers ground, the damage caused by the boat hull and prop on seagrass beds could take years (~10) to recover, assuming ideal conditions of light, nutrient, and herbivores. Think for instance, on the process of succession and recovery in coral reefs, tropical forest, mangrove, grassland, etc.
Explanation / Answer
Community sucession or ecological succession is a process of change in species structure of an ecological community over the time.
There are two types of Community succession:
a) Primary succession - It occurs in lifeless areas/regions where there is lack of soil or soil is infertile. It is a gradual growth of a new ecosystem.
b) Secondary succession - It occurs in areas where pre existing species were destroyed due to various reasons.
Factors influencing the community succession are:
1) In Terrestrial places ( forests, grasslands):
2) In aquatic places (Sea)
