John Snow’s Critical Research Study
1. John Snow demonstrated that one of the major ways that Cholera was spread was through water contamination. Why was his use of data related to the two major bottled water suppliers in London (the Lambert Co and the Southwark Vaauxhall Co) considered the perfect and critical test of his theory?
2. State his hypothesis as a syllogism.
3. What was the single variable in this study.
4. What were the controls in this study.
5. With this model why could he rule out such confounding factors as the age, sex, economic position, or employment status of those who were infected vs those who were not infected?
6. Literature you used in the Project.
Explanation / Answer
1. John Snow took water which was supplied by two companies Lambert Co and the Southwark Vaauxhall Co, as these are the main teo companies who were distributing water in the areas where there was a outbreak of cholera.
2. The hypothesis for John Snow's work was that water was the source of cholera. People were affected by cholera either due to use of contaminated water or through food.
3. The single variable which was used in the study was water.
4. he showed that there were more cholera death with the water supply from Southwark Vaauxhall Co. Whereas, areas where water was supplied by Lambert Co, the outbreak of cholera was less. So here in his study the data related to Lambert Co can be used as control.
5. In his study he ruled out the other cofounding factors like age, sex, economic position, or employment status between infected and not infected as he wanted to prove first that water is the main source for the disease cholera.
