Question
Figure 2 shows the results of an experiment performed on a ce line that responds to nerve growth factor (NGF) treatment resulting in differentiation and neurite growth: the cells turn into nerve cels. The process of neuronal differentiation is accompanied by a number of biochemical changes. In this experiment the effect of NGF on the subsequent expression of the cell growth control gene, c-fos, was investigated. The role of a protein kinase, protein kinase C, in the process of gene expression control also was studied. Cells were grown in six tissue culture dishes. In samples 1-3, protein kinase C was active in the cells. In samples 4-6, protelin kinase C was inactive in the cells. Samples 2 and 5 were treated with NGF for 30 minutes. Samples 3 and 6 were treated with phorbol ester (induces non-specific cell growth) for 30 minutes, Samples 1 and 4 were untreated controls. After incubation, cytoplasmic RNAs were prepared from the cells and subjected to Northern blot analysis using a radioactive c-fos gene fragment as a probe. Treatment Protein kinase C++ 4 5 6 NGF causes an increase of c-fos gene transcription in these cells. A The statement is supported by the information given B) The statement is contradicted by the information given C) The statement is nelther supported nor contradicted by the information given.Explanation / Answer
The correct answer seems to be A) The statement is supported by the information given
As the expression of c-fos is seen in both the cases of NGF and the expression is not affected by the presene or the absece of the protein kinase C.
