Explanation / Answer

Positive and negative reinforcements are two common concepts that managers usually use in the workplace to motivate employees to act.

Positive reinforcement refers to an increase in the probability of a behavior due to an increase in the conditional event.

For example Mr. X, a new manager in a Star company, started to praise workers for submitting their daily reports on time. After a weeks this reinforcement, by praise has greatly work and increased on-time reports. Hence, positive reinforcement, when properly used, could be one of the most powerful of all behavior change tools.

Whereas, Negative reinforcement consider to an increase in the probability of a behavior due to a shrinkage in the conditional event. Negative reinforcement motivates employees to perform best so they can have an unfriendly condition removed from their work environment.

Negative reinforcement works better and is more effective than positive reinforcement. For example very few people agree to work on the weekend. If a manger declares that Saturday will be an official holiday in exchange to get a higher target that must be reached by Friday, employees would be interested to work hard during the weekdays. This will be works as a negative reinforcement since the unpleasant experience of working on a Saturday is removed. In the end, the management gets the desired result higher output and one day less in the work week.
