Question

Figure 10.3 shows a diagram of the earth as seen from outer space looking down on the North Pole, which is marked N. How does the sun appear to people at locations A, B. C, and D? Use your answers, together with the fact that the sun rises in the cast and sets in the west, to explain what time of day it is at A, B, C. and D. Imagine floating in outer space above the North Pole. Looking down on the earth, which way is the earth rotating, clockwise or counterclockwise? Use your answers from Practice Exercise 1 to explain your answer. If you were floating above the South Pole instead of the North Pole, would the rotation look different? Figure 10.4 shows four different positions of the earth and moon as seen from outer space, floating above the North Pole (not to scale). The moon rotates around the earth in the direction indicated. In which of the diagrams in this figure is the moon waxing (getting bigger); in which is it waning (getting smaller)? Explain your answers.

Explanation / Answer

1. a. At A sun appears right above the head and perpendicular to the ground. And time at A is 12 noon

b. At B & D it appears as if sun is setting around the horizon, it is same longitude at A, so it will be 12 Noon only.

C. At C we can see it is not receiving light.. So it is middle of night around 12 midnight.

2.if seen above Northpole earth will rotate anti clockwise as sun rises in East and goes towards west. And similarly it will seem clockwise from southpole.

3.if moon goes towards the sunlight /sun it gets smaller and if it goes away from sun it becomes bigger.

In the diagrams a and b it becomes smaller and c and d it becomes bigger.
