Of all natural resources, water is the most essential. It supports vital processes of value to mankind such as food production, drinking water, and fisheries, among others. Water may seem abundant at first sight; after all, approximately 70% of the earth’s surface is covered with water. The reality is that supplying water to support mankind’s needs has not kept with pace with population and economic growth. Discuss the role that population growth has played in water pollution. List and describe 2 potential solutions to the potential “water crisis” we may face if water resources continue to be misused.

Population growth has played a major role in water pollution. More population means less oxygen in the environment and this somehow decreases oxygen level of water bodies too. Many organisms are dying because of water contamination. One of the most common ways fish and other organisms die is by the lack of oxygen there is in the polluted water.
Increase in population demanded development of industries and agriculture to support such a huge population and these industries dump their wastes in the river water.Also, the dumping of pesticides and other toxic residue causes many organisms to lose their life.
The two potential soultion for water crisis are-
1) Seawater desalination- Most of the water is in ocean. If we somehow develop a cheap technology to remove the salt ions from the seawater, they can be used in agriculture and industries.
2) Water Reuse- This is most viable option. Water used fromone purpose like taking bath can be used for another purpose like watering the plants. Besides this water should be treated properly to be reused for drinking purpose too.
