Question
Of all murder victoms in 2010 whose relation to the offender was known, 28.8% were killed by a family member and 53% by an acquaintance. The rest were killed by a stranger. What is the probability that a randomly selected murder victom was killed by a stranger?
In a recent survey, 15 people preferred milk, 27 people preferred coffee and 18 people preferred juice as their primary drink for breakfast. If a person is sellected at random, find the probability that the person preferred juice as their primary drink.
Thanks for the help!!!
Explanation / Answer
1) We have,
P(Family member) = 0.288 P(acquaintance) = 0.53
Consider,
P(Family member) + P(acquaintance) + P(Stranger) = 1
0.288 + 0.53 + P(Stranger) = 1
0.818 + P(Stranger) = 1
P(Stranger) = 1 - 0.818
P(Stranger) = 0.182
Hence, The probability that a randomly selected murder victom was killed by a stranger is ; 0.182.
2) We have,
N = 15 + 27 + 18 = 60 peoples.
x = 18 preferred jiuce.
By definition of probability,
P(preferred juice) = x/n = 18/60 = 0.3
Hence, The probability that the person preferred juice as their primary drink is : 0.30.
