Question

2)Since about WWII, there has been much research and findings about plate tectonics. The fact that the lithosphere is made of “plates” is just one of these. Go over the section in the text on Plate theory. In the discussion below, 1. Describe the relative motion at each of the three types of plate boundaries, and 2. How are these plates being driven? 3. How does the rock cycle figure into this?

3) What are the circular shapes you see all over the land and what are they used for? What relevance do they have with the water cycle?

Question 2 Answer

Since about WWII, there has been much research and findings about plate tectonics. The fact that the lithosphere is made of “plates” is just one of these and heplful to find continental drift theory.

1. Similarities in shape of Coastlines; The Atlantic coasts of south America and Africa have roughly similar shape. They would fit in nicely if they are brought in contact with each other.

2.Similar Orogenic belts; If the eastern coast south America and the western coast of Africa are fitted together, the orogenic belts of two continents which have the same range of ages and similar structural trend, are found to align themselves across the join.

3.Glossopteris flora; The remain of the glossopteris flora occur in the rock beds of the gondwana series in south america, south africa, india, australia and antarctica. These flolra maximum developed in permo-Corboniferous period.

The nature of their species distribution can only be explained if all the southern continents were joined together.

Index fossils are a relatively abundant and wide spread in a short period of time.

1. The relative motion at each of the three types of plate boundaries:

Divergent boundaries: Plates moves away each other.

Convergent boundaries: Plates moves towards each other.

Transform boundaries: Plates move sliding each other.

2. These plates are being driven by convection currents.

3. The rock cycle figure into this, producing new magma with plates colliding and subduction of plates.
