Question

Light containing wavelengths of 400 nm, 500 nm, and 650 nm is incident from air on a block of crown glass at an angle of 29.5°.

Figure 22.14 (a) Are all colors refracted alike, or is one color bent more than the others? CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOUR FROM THE ANSWERS BELOW

1. - 400 nm light is bent the most

2. - 500 nm light is bent the most

3. - 650 nm light is bent the most

4. - All colors are refracted alike

(b) Calculate the angle of refraction in each case to verify your answer.

?2 = ° _(400 nm)

?2 = ° _(500 nm)

?2 = ° _(650 nm)

Explanation / Answer

(a) 400nm wavelength light will bend highest... Because shorter wavelength light moves slower and bend the most.

(b) angle of refraction n = sin i / sin r

Sin r = sin i / n

For n = 400 nm

Sin r = sin 29.5°/ 400 nm

Sin r = 0.492 / 400

Sin r = 0.00123

r = 0.70°

For n = 500 nm

Sin r = 0.492 / 500

Sin r = 0.00098

r = 0.056°

For n = 650 nm

Sin r = 0.492 / 650

Sin r = 0.00075

r = 0.042°
