Question
Imagine you are discharging a 45 year-old patient who has been admitted for uncontrolled Diabetes Type II. You learn that she lives in a run-down, high crime area of the community. There is little to no access to fresh fruit or vegetables and high quality protein is hard to find. In fact, she lives in what is known as a "food desert." Even if she could find it she is unable to afford very much. She works full time to feed her three children and pay the rent. You educate her on the importance of a healthy diet and adequate exercise to control her illness but she informs you she has no time to cook and she is afraid to walk in her neighborhood so she picks up fast food on the way home. She can get a cheap pizza or burgers to feed her family. She does what she can but her situation doesn't allow her many options. How much of her illness can she control given her circumstance?
Explanation / Answer
Most important concept which is to understand here is that she doesnot have access to fresh vegetables and fruits , contrary to it she will have to eat burgers which can make things worse.
But one thing which can save her is exercise, brisk walking and a proper management of when she will be eating and how much.
By this kind of food it will be difficult for her to manage the illness. She needs to drink more water to compensate the mineral changes in the body.
