Imagine you are a member of the Academy of Management (ACM) and on the steering committee to choose a location for the organization's annual meeting. When making the recommendation, you will explain which management theory was used to make that choice. If your recommendation is based on analyzing a variety of circumstances because no single management theory applies to all situations, you are applying which approach to management? Contingency management Information management Systems management Operations management Another person noticed the steering committee lacked anyone with a marketing background. He suggested adding an AOM member with marketing experience, possibly creating a committee that is more productive than one in which each member works alone. In other words, the marketing expert may create: Synergy A subsystem A closed system An open system
Explanation / Answer
I will be applying “Operations Management” as it is the only approach of management that analyzes different circumstances, factors and variables in effective and efficient manner. All factors are quantified and model is built. Accordingly, score of each location is calculated and best possible location for the annual meeting is identified.
For example, in:
Step 1: Possible Locations are identified
Step 2: All factors / Circumstances are identified
Step 3: Weights are given to all factors on the basis of their importance
Step 4: all factors are given point out of 100 to all the location
Step 5: Composite rating for each location is achieved through weighted average method
Step 6: location with highest rating is selected
Other management approaches majorly deal with organizational setting and management of activities inside the organization.
Marketing expert may create “Synergy” as it can achieve the best results from the group. A possible committee including marketing expert will create synergy effect. In synergy, performance of group is more efficient and bigger than the sum of the performance of its individual members.
