Question

Three charges are arranged as shown in the figure below. Find the magnitude and direction of the electrostatic force on the charge q = 5.10 nC at the origin. (Let r12 = 0.315 m.)

magnitude
Use Coulomb's law to find the force that each charge exerts on the charge at the origin and combine the forces to find the net force. N direction
Examine the diagram and determine which quadrant contains the angle of the net force. Three charges are arranged as shown in the figure below. Find the magnitude and direction of the electrostatic force on the charge q = 5.10 nC at the origin. (Let r12 = 0.315 m.)

Explanation / Answer

force exerted by negative charge=9*10^9*5.1*3*10^-18/0.01=-2.565*10^-5N

force exerted by positive charge=9*10^9*5.1*6*10^-18/0.099=+2.78*10^-6N

direction=tan^-1(25.65/2.78)=83.81 degree from x axis and in 3rd quadrant.

net force on charge at origin=sqrt of( (2.565*10^-5)^2+(2.78*10^-6)^2)=2.58*10^-5N.
