Question

Three charges are arranged as shown in the figure below. Find the magnitude and direction of the electrostatic force on the charge q = 4.96 nC at the origin. (Let r12 = 0.265 m.)

If you can just find the direction of the resulting force, that would help me out. I already have the magnitude. I am struggling to find the direction using arctan (Fy/Fx). Points go to the right answer.

Explanation / Answer

Fx = k*q1*q2/r12^2 = 9*10^9*4.96*10^-9*6*10^-9/0.265^2 = 0.3814*10^-5 N ( -x direction)

Fy = k*q1*q3/r13^2 = 9*10^9*4.96*10^-9*3*10^-9/0.1^2 = 1.3392*10^-5 N (-y direction)

theta = tan^-1(Fy/Fx)

= tan^-1(1.3392/0.3814)

= 74.1 degrees with -x axis

= 74.1+180

= 254.1 degrees with +x axis
