7. Questions about waves. Be careful - in each problenm involving a velocity, explain briefly whether you should be using v-lfor speed- distance/time, and how you know. Then clearly identify the values used in your calculation, preferably using a table. (a) suppose you cereulerliv dip your finker into a ink fillof wavelength of these waves as you vibrate your finger faster? Justify your answer (b) An ocean wave has a wavelength of 10.0 m. One of these waves passes the front of a boat every 2.0 s. What is the speed of the wave? (c) Water waves in a shallow dish are 6.0 cm long. At one point, the water oscillates up and down at a rate of 4.8 oscillations per second. (a) What is the speed of these waves? (b) What is the period of these water waves?

Explanation / Answer

a)

When you vibrate your finger faster ,its frequency increases .since wavelength is inversly proportional to frequency i.e

lambda =V/f

Its Wavelength decreases

b)

frequency

f=1/T =1/2 =0.5 Hz

Speed of wave

V=0.5*10 =5 m/s

c)

a)

Speed of wave

V=f*lambda =4.8*0.06

V=0.288 m/s =0.29 m/s (approx)

b)

Period

T=1/f =1/4.8 =0.2083 s =0.21 s (approx)

therefore
