Question
A 80-kg fisherman in a 120-kg boat throws a package of mass m = 15 kg horizontally toward the right with a speed of vi = 4.2 m/s as in the figure below. Neglecting water resistance, and assuming the boat is at rest before the package is thrown, find the velocity of the boat after the package is thrown.
Explanation / Answer
total mass of the boat and fisher man m1 = 120+80 = 200 kg
mass of the package m2 = 15 kg
both are at rest initially u1 = 0 , u2 = 0
final velcity of the package v2 = +4.2 m/s
from conservation of momentum
m1u1+m2u2 = m1v1+m2v2
0 + 0 = 200 v1 + 15(4.2)
v1 = - 0.315 m/s
-ve sign indicates velocity is towards left
