Question
I don't just want the answer can you show me in detail how to find each one?
The lightbulb in the circuit diagram of (picture above) has a resistance of 0.50? . Let ?Vab be the magnitude of the potential difference between point a and point b.
1. What is the value of ?V12?
2. What is the value of ?V23?
3. What is the value of
?V12 if the bulb is unscrewed from its socket?
4. What is the value of
?V23 if the bulb is unscrewed from its socket?
Explanation / Answer
Since the resistor and bulb are in series=> Equivalent resistance=2.5 ohm
=> I=V/R(Ohm's law) => I=3/2.5 =1.2
Again using V=IR=> V12=I*R=1.2*2=2.4 V
V23=I*R(bulb)=1.2*0.5=0.6 V
If the bulb is unscrewed from its socket it becomes an open circuit and no current will flow through it=> V12=I*R=0*2=0 V
So all the battery potential difference will come across point 2 and 3=> V23=3 V
