Question

The tallest man on record measures 8'3" tall. Which of the following statements BEST reflects how he was able to reach such a height? Like many fish, this man has indeterminate growth, and he will continue to grow until death. More of the bones in his body were formed directly without being formed as cartilage first, so his bones continued to grow as he achieved greater height. He took longer to develop as a fetus before being born During growth, the growth plates of his skeleton laid down cartilage at exceptionally fast rates, and the result was longer limbs and greater height.

Explanation / Answer

During growth, the growth plates of skeleton laid down car at exceptionally fast rates, and the result was longer limbs and greater height.

The long bones of the limbs have a growth plate at the end. The growth plate is made of cartilage, which is a tough, elastic tissue. Cartilage cells in the growth plate multiply and move down the bone to produce a matrix, or tissue from which new bone is formed. These cartilage cells then die, leaving spaces. Special cells called osteoblasts then produce bone (by laying down the minerals calcium and phosphorus) to fill the spaces and replace the matrix. Once all the cartilage in the growth plate has been turned to bone, growth stops.
