Question

A proton enters the region between the two plates shown in the figure moving in the x-direction with a speed v = 2.97

A proton enters the region between the two plates shown in the figure moving in the x-direction with a speed v = 2.97 ·106 m/s. The potential of the top plate is 200 V, and the potential of the bottom plate is 0 V. (The separation of the plates is d = 28.1 mm.) What is the magnitude of the magnetic field, , that is required between the plates for the proton to continue traveling in a straight line along the x-direction?

Explanation / Answer

electric field between the plates = E = voltage / distance = 200 / ( 0.0281) = 7117.4377

so.. force on electron due to electric field = q*E
magnetic field = q*v*B

for moving in straigth line ,

so.. q*E = q*v*B

so.. B = E / v = 7117.43772/ ( 2.97 * 10^6) = 0.002396444 T

so.. magnetic field required = 0.002396444 T
