Question
Two speakers face each other and radiate coherently and in phase. The speakers are separated by a distance of 5.5m and emit a sound with a frequency of 272 Hz. Use 340m/s for the speed of sound in air.
a.) What is the wavelength of the sound?
b.) You happen to be standing exactly half-way between the speakers. Will you have a loud maximum or a soft minumum?
c.) How far do you need to travel to a speaker in order to have the sounds change (i.e. loud to soft or soft to loud)?
d.) How many loud maximum intensity positions are there between the speakers? (Hint - find distance between one maximum and the next)
Explanation / Answer
d = 5.5 m
a) v = lamda*f
lamda = v/f = 340/272 = 1.25 Hz
b)at the center constructive interferece takes place. so we here a loud sound.
c) we need to move lamda/2 distance
x = lamda/2 = 1.25/2 = 0.625 m
d)
n = d/lamda - 5.5/1.25 = 4.4
so, at 4 times constructive interference takes place.
so, at 4 places we can here loud sound.
