Question

A blue car with mass mc = 431.0 kg is moving east with a speed of vc = 21.0 m/s and collides with a purple truck with mass mt = 1291.0 kg that is moving south with a speed of vt = 10.0 m/s . The two collide and lock together after the collision.
1) What is the magnitude of the initial momentum of the car?
kg-m/s
2) What is the magnitude of the initial momentum of the truck?
kg-m/s
3) What is the angle that the car-truck combination travel after the collision? (give your answer as an angle South of East)

Explanation / Answer

1) m1.v1 = 484 x 18 = 8712

2) truck = m2.v2 = 1297 x 10 = 12970

4) let common velocity after collision = Vx in east and vy in south

then by moment conservation ;

m1.v1 = (m+M).vx

so, 8712 = (m +M) .vx

Now, 12970 = (M +m) x vy

so, car truck momentum = sqrt (8712 ^2 + 12970^) = 15624.33

3) angle = tan^-1 (12970/8712) = 56.11 South of eats

5) velocity = 15624.33/(484 + 1297) = 8.77m/s

6) Ke.i = Ke f

by conservation of enrgy
