Review Questions 11 NAME LAB SECTION NO DATE 1. What is transpiration? 2. What is a potometer? 3. How fast did the bubble in the potometer move (a) without the fan? (b) with the fan? 4. What is guttation? 5. What name is given the special cells through which guttation takes place? 6. Record the temperature in each of the insulated bottles containing the corn kernels: Live Kernels Dead Kernels Time start: 2 hrs 4 hrs: 6 hrs: 8 hrs: 10 hrs: 12 hrs: 14 hrs: 16 hrs: 7. If bacteria were allowed to grow on the dead corn kernels, how might the results differ from those obtained? Why? 8. What causes the white precipitate in the baryta water? 9. What is the function of the sugar in the yeast suspension?

Explanation / Answer

1) Transpiration is a process of movement of water molecules from the roots to diffrent aerial parts in plants namely leaves, flower etc which then evaporates in gaseous form in the atmosphere.

2)A potometer is an device used for measuring the rate of water uptake in of leafy shoots in plants. The rate of water uptake is dependent on transpiration and photosynthesis.

3) a) The rate of movement of air bubble measures the rate of transpiration.Without the fan it might take about 10 to 30 seconds even longer.

b)with fan the the bubble can reach the surface more faster , making it less than 10 to 30 seconds time.

4) Guttation is a process of secreting water droplets which can be seen in vasicular plants.eg: tomato, grasses etc

5)hydathode: special structure in plant through which gluttation takes place.

6)no data

7)no data cannot be answered.

8)An aqueos solution of barium hydroxide is mainly refered as baryta water.Addition of cholic acid in baryta water makes it white precipatate .

9)sugar is added in the yeast suspension as it acts as an Carbon,Hydrogen and Oxygen source thus in shorts it is needed by the yeast cell for energy.
