Question
A particle has a charge of q = +5.7 ?C and is located at the origin. As the drawing shows, an electric field of Ex = +212 N/C exists along the +x axis. A magnetic field also exists, and its x and y components are Bx = +1.2 T and By = +1.6 T. Calculate the force (magnitude and direction) exerted on the particle by each of the three fields when it is (a) stationary, (b) moving along the +x axis at a speed of 345 m/s, and (c) moving along the +z axis at a speed of 345 m/s.
have tried other techniques on here to no avail. please help
Explanation / Answer
F-q(E+ v.B)
a) v=0
hence f=5.7*(212) N =1208.4 N
b)
B=1.2T, since force along y axis do not act on charge
f=5.7(212+345*1.2) = 3568.2N
c)when particle moves along z axis the force exerted on particle is same the force exerted on particle when it is stationary since the velocity of particle along x axis is zero
i.e f=q.E=1208.4n
