Question
A woman's high-heeled shoe has a gold stiletto heel, with minimum diameter of 5 mm. Using the criteria that the stress when standing on one foot should be no more than 1/10th the tensile stress, what is the maximum weight advisable for women who wish to wear this shoe? With T.S.=45,000 lbf/inch^2This is what I did.
stress= force / area
the force would be the woman's weight, so solving for force gives:
force= stress*area
5mm = 25/127 inches since Area=pi*r^2= .030434in^2
Stress is 1/10 the T.S.
So force= (1/10)(45000 lbf/in^2)(.030434in^2) which gives 137 pounds.
Did I do that right? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :-)
