Question
Two straight parallel wires carry currents in opposite directions as shown in the figure. One of the wires carries a current of I2= 11.2 A. Point A is the midpoint between the wires. The total distance between the wires is d = 13.0 cm. Point C is 4.45 cm to the right of the wire carrying current I2. Current I1is adjusted so that the magnetic field at C is zero.
a.) Calculate the value of the current I1.
b.)Calculate the magnitude of the magnetic field at point A.
c.)What is the force between two 1.31 m long segments of the wires?
Explanation / Answer
the magnetic field due to I1 and I2 are opposite in direction at C
they will cancel when---
oI1/2*17.45 = oI2/2*4.45
So,I1 = 43.919A
the magnetic field at A are in the same direction due to both the currents, so they add up...
B = oI1/2*6.5 + oI2/2*6.5 = 16.96*10-5 T
