Question

Figure 28-43 displays a 10.1 V battery and three uncharged capacitors of capacitances C1 = 4.05 ?F,C2 = 6.28 ?F and C3 = 3.48 ?F. The switch is thrown to the left side until capacitor 1 is fully charged. Then the switch is thrown to the right. What is the final charge (in C) on capacitor 3?

Figure 28-43 displays a 10.1 V battery and three uncharged capacitors of capacitances C1 = 4.05 ?F,C2 = 6.28 ?F and C3 = 3.48 ?F. The switch is thrown to the left side until capacitor 1 is fully charged. Then the switch is thrown to the right. What is the final charge (in C) on capacitor 3?

Explanation / Answer

Total voltage on C1 after charging = 10.1 V

charge on C1 = Q = C1V = 4.05 F x 10.1 = 40.905 C

When the battery is disconnected and the switch is thrown to the other side, the a charge re-distribution takes place in direct propertion to the capacitace of the capacitors i.e. in ratio of their capacitances,

charge on C3 = Q x C3/(C1 + C2 + C3)

= 40.905 x 3.48/(4.05 + 6.28 + 3.48)

= 10.308 C

= 1.0308 x 10-5 C
