Question

A roller coaster car of mass 500 kg has a speed of v0 = 21 ms-1 at point A, located at a height of h = 18 m. The car can move with no friction acting between points A and B. Find the speed of the car when it reaches point B. Once past point B, the car feels a friction force of 2000 N. How far from point B does the car travel before coming to rest?

Explanation / Answer

(a) Since there is no friction from point A to B. By conservation of energy: Loss in GPE = Gain in KE (9.8)*(18)=(1/2)(v^2 - 21^2) ---> v= sqrt( 2*(9.8)*(18) +(21^2)) = 28.17m/s (b) acceleration due to friction = -2000/500 = -4 m/s^2 using the kinematic equation: v^2 = u^2 + 2as ---> s = (28.17^2/(2*4)) = 99.193m
