Question
Question 1: a person of mass 100 kg is standing on an accurate scale in an elevator. The scale reads the force that the scale exerts on the person. The elevator is in a buliding on the earth. Find the acceleration (size and direction) of the person if:
a) the scale reads 980 N
b) the scale reads 490 N
c) the scale reads 0 N
d) the scale reads 1960 N
Explanation / Answer
original weight of person = 100*9.8 = 980 N a). the elevator is moving with 0 acceleration. b). since the weight has decreased, the acceleration is downwards. m*(g-a) = 490 => 100*(9.8-a) = 490 => a = 4.9 m/s^2 c). again the acceleration is downwards with an acceleration of 9.8 m/s^2 d). since the weight has increased, the acceleration is upwards. m*(g+a) = 1960 => 100*(9.8+a) = 1960 => a = 9.8 m/s^2
