Question

A microscope has an objective with a 4-mm focal length and an ocular with a 30-mm focal length. The two lenses are separated by 0.16 m, and the final image is                     formed 0.25 m from the ocular. A) Where is the image formed by the objective? B) Where is the specimen related to the objective? C) What is the magnification                     of the microscope?

                    I know I want to convert both focal length measurements in units of meters. So for the 4-mm focal length, I have 4x10^-3 m and for the 30-mm focal length, I                     have .03 m. I'm not sure how to go on from here...

Explanation / Answer

(a).

L = 170 + 28.1

L = 198.1 mm = 19.81 cm

(b).

objective lens,

1/s + 1/s' = 1/f_ob

1/s + 1/170 = 1/3.35

s = 3.41734 cm

Magnification is

M = (s'/s)(25/f_ok)

M = (170/3.41734)(250/28.1)

M = 442.58 x

(c).

s = 3.41734 cm = 34.1734 mm
